Hookah flavors: how to choose (and get it right the first time)

The menu at a good hookah bar can run to fifty items, and the server is standing there waiting. At first glance hookah flavors look like a list with no end, but they all come down to four families, and once you know which one is yours, you're halfway there. The map is below, followed by what people smoke most and how to mix it all.

The four families of hookah flavors

When the US CDC describes hookah tobacco, it lists apple, mint, cherry, chocolate, coconut, licorice, cappuccino and watermelon as typical flavors. That list, and the thousands of shisha flavors that aren't on it, fit neatly into four families:

How to choose: start with what you drink

When someone asks us what the best hookah flavor is, our first question back is: what do you drink? If you like lemonade and spritzers, start with fresh and citrus flavors. If you always get cake with your coffee, try the dessert ones. It sounds like a horoscope, but it works at a lounge too: tell the server what you like to eat and drink and let them suggest something.

Then there's strength. The same flavor on blonde and on dark tobacco makes for two different hookahs (more on that further down). For your first night, ask for something mild and fresh, just like in our beginner's guide: lemon mint or apple.

The most popular hookah flavors: what the ratings show

Our list has 359 tobacco brands, and 294 of them are in the largest tobacco review database on the internet, with 12,708 flavors listed and 132,073 ratings. The thing is, that database leans hard to the east. Russian brands account for 94% of all ratings, while Turkish and American brands get barely 1.5% each. So when you read “most popular” below, read it as “most popular on the Eastern European scene.”

Menus here in Serbia are a lot simpler. Habibi in Subotica carries mint, strawberry, watermelon, peach and lemon, and Sahara in Pančevo lists green apple, mint and strawberry vanilla as its standard flavors.

As of late September 2026, the top of the community chart in that database looks like this:

The first two are Russian cooling additives. Of the 100 top-rated flavors, 99 are Russian, and the only exception is the American Cane Mint.

It gets more interesting when you put two lists side by side: the hundred top-rated flavors on the chart and the twenty with the most ratings. Tobacco-forward and dessert flavors lead the first one, fruity and citrus ones the second:

One flavor can fall into more than one group. “Refreshing” covers mint, cooling additives, eucalyptus and gum. For the second list we took the most-reviewed flavors in the database and ranked them by number of ratings.

By number of ratings, Must Have Pinkman (615) is first by a mile: pink grapefruit and strawberries with raspberry syrup. In seventh place is Darkside Supernova (250), a cooling additive with no fruit. More on that one in the next section.

Ice hookah flavors and mint: what's the difference

They sit next to each other on the menu, but in the bowl they do different jobs. Mint is a flavor. Ice is the cold that comes from cooling agents, and it can go with anything. Al Fakher even describes its mint as a flavor with “the finest of cooling agents,” and Starbuzz says its Blue Mist, a blueberry flavor, is cold without any mint.

On its official site Adalya marks ice as a separate tag: Blue Ice is blueberry with ice, Double Melon Ice is melon and watermelon with ice, and Ice Bonbon is, going literally by the description, “cold ice with sugar.” Supernova is pure cold, so only a little goes into the bowl. You can buy ice flavors in Serbia too (Element Air Fruit Ice, Sebero Ice Candy).

Real ice cubes in the base are a different story. The colder the smoke, the more muted the flavor, so ice isn't a good idea with delicate flavors. It works best with mint. If you add it at home, pour in the water first and then drop the cubes in slowly, because cold glass cracks more easily.

For cigarettes, the CDC says menthol cools the throat and airways, so the smoke feels milder and is easier to inhale. On hookahs, the CDC points out that the water doesn't filter the smoke.

Hookah flavor combinations people actually smoke

These combos come up again and again in international mixing guides, and Adalya and Al Fakher sell four of the six as ready-made flavors. The first number in the ratio is the main flavor.

The rules are simple. When one flavor leads, it's 60 to 40, and when you mix three, 50/30/20. The usual advice for beginners is to start at 50/50. With more than three flavors, the bowl easily turns into a mess once it heats up.

Lounges in Serbia do mint combos too. At Habibi you can get any classic flavor with menthol, and at Caffe & Nargila Bar in Novi Sad the menu goes from fruit mixes all the way to plain mint.

Same flavor, different brand

Watermelon mint from two different makers won't give you the same smoke. Part of the difference is the leaf. Fumari, an American tobacco maker, explains that dark leaf is stronger and has more nicotine than blonde, and that lighter fruit flavors can sit more naturally on blonde leaf, spicy ones on dark. So when your favorite flavor from a new brand doesn't do it for you, the leaf may be to blame. Try it from a brand with blonde leaf before you write it off.

The difference shows up within a single company, too. Adalya makes Love 66 both in its main line and in the Adalya Black line, which uses dark tobacco with more nicotine. Adalya flavors: what's in Love 66 and the other hits

In a sample of tobacco menus from 2,688 venues around the world, Adalya is on the menu at 1,537 (57%), right behind Darkside and Tangiers. The sample doesn't represent Serbia (Darkside is at 91% of the venues in it). In the review database Adalya has 1,142 ratings and 227 flavors, and 63% of the raters who answered would smoke it again.

The official site lists four brands: Adalya, Aqua Mentha, Adalya Black and Blue Horse. Mint or ice shows up in almost half the catalog: 51 of the 108 flavor pages. In the main line it's 26 of 39, in Blue Horse all 22, and in Adalya Black just one of 20.

Flavor descriptions come from the official Adalya site, except for Love 66. Ratings are from the same review database, as of late September 2026. Blue Horse is a second brand from the same company.

At a lounge or at home

The upside of a lounge is choice. Muar in Novi Sad has more than 200 flavors, nicotine-free ones included. At some places the price depends on the flavor, too: at Sahara a hookah with standard flavors costs 700 dinars (about €6), and with premium flavors like African Queen and Lucifer it's 800 (about €7). African Queen is a fruit mix from the German brand O's Tobacco, with 18 kinds of fruit.

At home, start with ready-made mint combos, since you don't have to guess the ratio. As for heat: two coals to start, a third only if the smoke is weak. If it's harsh on your throat, take one coal off. On a heat management device you can also open the slots wider or lift the lid for a moment. These lounges, each in a different city, had a Google rating of 4.8 or higher in August. At Gotcha in New Belgrade, Russian mixes are what people smoke most, and if you don't know what you want, the hookah master will pick for you. Cyberpunk in Kragujevac carries tobacco from more than ten producers, and its specialty is stronger, black tobacco, so it's a handy place to see how your flavor behaves on dark leaf.
