The menu says “watermelon mint,” but the kind of night you'll have depends more on the tobacco brand than on the watermelon. The same watermelon from one maker is as light as juice, and from another it glues you to the armchair after three puffs. So we sat down and did our homework on the best hookah tobacco brands. We combined the largest tobacco review database on the internet with the tobacco menus of more than 3,000 hookah bars around the world and ended up with a list of 359 brands. Below is who's on top and why, and how to use that the next time your server asks “which tobacco?”

How we built the list

We looked at two things. The first is how many people rate a brand: a measure of what the enthusiast community talks about, what people buy to smoke at home and what they argue over. The second is how many venues have the brand on their menu: a measure of what actually gets smoked when you go out. Those two lists aren't the same at all. More on that a bit further down.

One honest caveat: the review database comes mostly from the Russian-speaking world, so Russian brands naturally come out stronger there than they would in, say, German or American stats. That doesn't skew the picture much, since the Eastern school of hookah tobacco sets the trends in lounges from Dubai to Belgrade these days anyway.

First, the basics: blonde vs. dark leaf tobacco

Before we get to brands, there's one split that everything else hangs on. All shisha tobacco is a blend of leaf, molasses or glycerin and flavoring, but which leaf goes in changes everything.

Between those two poles sits a growing middle class: Must Have, Element, Spectrum, Sebero and Duft. They give you full flavor without knocking you off your feet, so they're what most lounge guests like best.

The best hookah tobacco brands: who's who in the top 15

Eleventh place goes to Hooligan (Хулиган), but we'll get to that one below because it's a special case. The rest of the top 40 is mostly Russian craft brands: Chabacco, Sarma (Сарма), Dogma (Догма), Bonche, Jent, Trofimoff's, Deus, Brusko, Starline and Sapphire Crown. Alongside them are a few familiar names, like Turkish Serbetli, Egyptian Nakhla (a company with more than a century of history and the original “double apple”) and American Starbuzz with its famous Blue Mist.

Two worlds: what people talk about and what actually gets smoked

Here's the part that surprised us most. When you put the number of ratings next to the number of venues, the brands fall into two almost separate worlds:

The top half of the table belongs to enthusiast brands: small craft makers that people buy for home, rate and argue about, but that you'll hardly ever find at a lounge. The bottom half is made up of the workhorses of the bar trade: classics nobody bothers to review because everyone knows them by heart, and they're on the menu at every other bar in the world.

Darkside is the only brand that's clearly first on both lists. People argue about it on forums, and it's also what hookah masters pack on a Friday night when the place is full.

Three more things the numbers show

• Russia is a superpower. Of the 359 brands on the list, 203 are Russian, and so are 30 of the top 40. Next come Turkey (16) and the US (14), then Jordan, Kazakhstan, India and Egypt. The countries hookah originally came from are now far behind by number of brands.
• The top is narrow. The ten biggest brands account for 40% of all ratings, and the other 349 split the remaining 60%. That's a long tail of small makers, many of which last only a season or two.
• A huge range doesn't make a brand popular. Must Have, with around a hundred flavors, stands shoulder to shoulder with Darkside, which has three times as many. Nakhla has just 26 flavors in the catalog and is in 1,400 bars. Looks like a couple of flavors people actually remember are worth more than a giant catalog.

How to use this at a hookah lounge

And one trick: the tobacco menu is the fastest way to size up a lounge. A bar that keeps two or three dark brands next to the classics usually has a hookah master who knows how to pack them, and you'll taste that even in the most ordinary lemon mint. Once you know the tobacco family, picking the actual flavor is the easy part. For that we have a flavor map.

What about Serbia?

For a long time the scene here was purely classic (Al Fakher, Adalya and the odd Serbetli), but in the last few years it has been turning east fast. More and more lounges in Belgrade and Novi Sad feature Darkside, Must Have and Element as their big selling point, and guests and bar owners arriving from the Russian-speaking world have brought brands nobody here had seen until recently.
